I took downs my old antenna – at least 20 years old and installed this new HD antenna. I also took off my old booster and added a need booster to match the antenna. Well guess what I wasted my money, I get the same reception and picture that I did before. Same channels are weak and the same channels are strong. Was easy to install and put together ans works.

2 Stars Anrennas Direct DB8 not for fringe areas
This antenna is not for a fringe or deep fringe area, I only live 45 miles away from the transmitter in NYC, and I received only one station with half the signal than with my 15=year-old UHF/VHF antenna that has 30 elements for the UHF.

I receive many channels in HD with my old antenna even if the signal is not strong with a signal strength of 50% to 65%, the highest I’ve got wit the DB8 was 24% on channel 5 (the only channel received).

1 Star Look Elsewhere
I ignored the reviewers who noted the poor construction, etc. and bought anyway. The instructions are useless, and the product simply cannot be assembled as shown in the images. Even the instructions on the AD site are less than useless. Any company that markets a product so shoddily made and who cannot manage to write simple instructions to assemble a product with about 10 screws will be out of business before too long. Maybe if I drilled a few more holes I could get it to look something like the picture,,,but that would void the warranty…. You’d be far better off going with another brand.

This was the 4th antena we bought trying to get all of our area channels. This antenna picked up everything we were looking for and then some. If you are looking for a great HDTV antenna, look no further. This is it!

2 Stars Very Disappointing
Purchased the DB8 based on the reviews after our previous antenna came down in a storm. We live about 35 miles south east of Nashville and the UHF reception was only fair. Unfortunately, there were still a couple of stations remaining in the VHF range and this antenna does VERY poorly with VHF. As for being multi-directional… it wasn’t. It was very sensitive to direction, much more so that a “directional” antenna such as the Winegard HD8200U.

After six months, I finally tossed it and replaced it with a Winegard HD8200U. Should have purchased this antenna in the first place. The HD8200U has great reception for both UHF and VHF stations.

3 Stars Didn’t Work for Me
I ordered this antenna as a last ditch hope for “free air” television after the analog to digital goverment ordered switch over. It did not work for me. I live on the south side of a hill and the transmitters I needed to receive signal from were not only far away, over 60 miles, but were transmitting from the north. Apparently the new digital signal requires a better “line of sight” position than my roof top. I have now installed DirectTV and am enjoying 50 clear channels from the satellite which resides in the southern sky.

This is a great anntena. We seen our neighbors had one and they said it really worked well, so we ordered on and installed it ourselves. We were real satisfied and our other neighbor seen it, and asked about it. I ordered one for them and helped them install it. This last one was for another neighbor. We installed that one too, and they are real happy with theirsd too. So our neighborhood has 4 of these anntenas already this summer. An excellant item !!

We got 18 channels at just above ranch-style-home roof height. We are about 40 miles from the Toledo, Ohio stations. We only got 9 channels with our tv top box and home made hanger antenna. You still need the tv top box if you do not have hd tv, to unscramble the signal. You get a nice weather channel, and a guide channel in this area as well. We were missing a screw, and they got it to us within the week.

2 Stars Not a VHF Antenna
I take no issue with the product. My problem was that the Amazon add stated that this antenna was both VHF & UHF. After I installed it, & got less reception than my original on a few channels, I called Channel Master tech. They informed me that this antenna is a UHF antenna, even though it will receive a small VHF signal just by virtue of physics. So it worked just fine on the UHF signals, but I was already getting excellent reception from my original antenna. I must say that Amazon showed their usual class by allowing me to return the antenna for a full refund. So, I am writing this review just to warn you that this antenna is a UHF antenna.

I purchased this to go on a small TV at home. This item picked up only one channel more than the built in antenna. The extendability of unit is flimsy and will not stay in place. They fall down constantly to the sides. Spend the extra couple dollars and find something of better quality. I regret this purchase.

5 Stars Affordable and reliable
I have been struggling with clear reception for years. I have a digital tv and was simply using the cable line that the previous tenant had installed as my antenna. This worked, but if I nudged the cable at all I would have to spend the next half hour trying to get decent reception. So, I bought this Philips antenna. I get every channel perfectly now! No more screaming at the tv. Its a great little antenna.

I bought 3 of these advertised as HDTV antennas. They do not perform as well as the plain rabbit ears I was using, appearing to be too directional to be of much use, where the rabbit ears picked up all 12 digital channels here without moving. Dunno why that would be, but there it is.

4 Stars Well built with one exception, but might not work for you
This simple passive (unamplified) antenna is solidly built. The base is weighted enough that it doesn’t fall over easily, and the rabbit ears are stiff enough that you can spread them apart without their flopping over.

My one complaint is that the antenna uses a screw-on plug that’s difficult to attach to the TV. When connecting it I wished I had three hands: one to hold the cable, one to steady the TV, and one to twist the threaded connector onto the TV. If they’d used a slip-on plug instead of a screw-on plug then two hands would have been enough. Also, I think the pin on the plug was misaligned, since it took several tries before I could get it to start screwing on.

My wife and I bought this antenna for a new flat-screen television, which is replacing a 10-year old tube television. The rabbit ears (and butterfly) antenna on the old TV worked fine with the inexpensive digital converter box that we’d purchased. (We’d meant to keep the old television for several more years, but then decided to go for a 1080p flat-screen.)

Since the old antenna worked, I thought this new antenna would work just as well, but I was wrong. That’s not influencing my review because so many things can affect signal strength. After moving the new antenna around the house, I think the old antenna worked better because it was sitting ON TOP of the old television, while the new antenna is sitting a few feet lower, next to the new television. If I pick the new antenna up and lift it a few feet I get much better reception on the few channels that are troublesome.

Here are a few suggestions if you’re considering this antenna:

Use an “.org” or “.gov” website that gives guidance on antennas. For the best results, give the site your exact street address, including how high your antenna will be above street level. You’re not likely to have much luck with a cheap passive antenna unless the website suggests a small multidirectional antenna type for all the channels you’re interested in. If you decide you want to aim your antenna then some websites let you print a map showing you the directions that your TV stations transmit from (although you might get a stronger reflected signal from a different direction).

If you buy the antenna and it “almost” works then you can try aiming it. The rabbit ears on the antenna pick up VHF channels. When the ears point straight up they pick up signals equally well from all directions. When they are spread apart in a “V” shape then your best reception will be directly in front of and directly behind the “V”. Similarly, the “O” part of the antenna picks up UHF channels. When you look straight through the “O” then your best reception will be directly in front of you and directly behind you.

3 Stars Rather Disappointed
This unit was purchased to replace a 20+ year old antenna that was somewhat corroded and had several bent or missing elements. The old antenna was pulling in all of the local Baltimore stations well, but reception of Washington DC area channels (particularly UHF) was spotty at best. After reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews here and elsewhere, I had high hopes that the HD-8200U would improve my reception substantially.

As others have noted, the instructions do leave a bit to be desired. With careful review and some common sense, though, assembly is not too difficult. In general, the antenna appears to be well constructed. I did encounter one manufacturing issue, however, when attempting to join the front and rear sections. A bolt hole that had been punched in the tube had not been done so cleanly. The result was a large “burr” on the inside of the tube that needed to be broken off and filed down before the parts could be put together.

After completing assembly and mounting the unit in the same orientation as the previous antenna, I hurried into the house – anxious to check out signal strengths and rescan for any additional channels. I was surprised to find that I had in fact lost several stations. The receiver was no longer detecting DC channels 4, 5, 20, and 66 at all. I spent considerable time adjusting the antenna rotor, but to no avail. Signal strengths for all of the local stations (both UHF and VHF) are quite good but about the same as with the old antenna.

I am not running a preamplifier, but I really expected this unit to perform at least as well as my previous weather-worn, beat up antenna without one. This has been a waste of both time and money for me.

5 Stars GREAT Reception!
For years we had an RCA VHF/UHF antenna mounted to our chimney, but it came down Easter weekend of 2009 from a tornado. Since several of the Nashville stations had already began broadcasting digitally, we were really enjoying digital TV. For a replacement I decided to try a DB8 from Antennas Direct, but it failed to live up to its reviews (don’t get me started). It was only UHF and upper VHF and none of the stations were all that strong.

Well… it’s a new day and a new antenna. Got the HD8200U from Amazon and it really sucks! That’s a good thing! It sucks in every broadcast station in middle Tennessee. It’s pulling in over 10 different stations, most of which are broadcasting with subchannels. I now have 23 different channels/sub-channels to choose.

Part of what makes this antenna work so well is its size. This is a BIG antenna. It’s 14′ long and over 9′ at the widest. But, it was amazingly easy to assemble and install. It is very light weight and well balanced. I installed it myself – took about hour to assemble it and then another hour or so to get it installed. Do not even think about installing it with anything stronger than a breeze. It accepts a 2″ pole, but I just used a 1-1/4″ top pole from a chain-link fence. Worked great. Oh, this is without any amplifier and it’s split to three TVs. Most stations are pegged around 98% signal strength with a couple around 85%

Now that I’ve gushed over how great it is, let me say a few things that really ticked me off. They’re minor, but very annoying. 1) Ordered the antenna and one of the vanes was installed backwards at the factory. It was riveted on so I couldn’t correct it. Because of this, it wouldn’t lock in to place. Returned it to Amazon and had them ship another. 2) Second antenna was OK, but there were some nuts and bolts missing. Had to make a trip to Home Depot to get what was missing.

At any rate, I’m very pleased with the reception and how easily the installation went. Except for the two problems, it’s about as perfect as can be. While this isn’t a cheap antenna, it’s a whole lot cheaper than paying for cable or satalite each month!

2 Stars Big Disappointment
I used the Winegard web site for their recommendations and followed it by the letter. Antenna must be assembled on the ground. Impossible to do on the roof. It is big and bulky so have at least another person to help you get it to the mounting position. The signal strength is worse than the 20 year old antenna I had in the attic which was 1/2 the size. I get fewer stations with the new Winegard than I got prevoius old antenna. The new antenna is outside and 20 ft higher than the old and pointing in the same direction. Big expense, poor results. May work fine if you are in a strong signal area but I bought it to improve recepption as I am out 50-60 miles.

I live 30 miles from Chicago.

Before purchasing this antenna I read all the reviews. Most of the concerns that people seemed to have had nothing to do with the antenna, but actually centered around the flimsy cardboard box it was shipped in. When our antenna arrived the box was loose at both ends and there were a few nuts rolling free in the box that could have very easily fallen out. But we lucked out and everything was there.

By the way – we utilized the super free shipping that Amazon offers. The antenna arrived a couple of days after we ordered it.

We put the antenna in the attic of our two story home. Our home is surrounded by larger houses and lots of very tall trees. We get all our normal channels, plus a few I never knew existed. I was concerned that, with such a powerful antenna, we might pick up too many channels and they would spill over on each other, but since this antenna is very directional, that has not happened.

I am very pleased with this antenna. It feels like I’ve purchased a lifetime of free reception for the mere cost of about three months of cable TV.

By the way, be careful when exiting your attic. My ladder slipped and I fell out of the attic. But don’t worry! I’m okay….just pulled a muscle in my arm while trying to break the fall.

5 Stars Flawless HD Reception, including VHF
I’ve been watching HD over-the-air for a couple of years now. Until buying this antenna a month ago or so, I had a very similar UHF-only antenna. In my area, one of the major stations is VHF, which I hadn’t properly considered when we first made the switch to over-the-air. However, for whatever reason, while the reception of the analog version of that station was pretty poor, the HD version seemed to come in fine.

Unfortunately, over the next couple of years, the HD reception gradually degraded to the point that it was gone completely this summer. I have no idea why this happened, but I knew that I didn’t have a VHF antenna. With the fall TV season getting started — and more importantly, Dallas Cowboys on FOX (the station in question) — I decided it was time to take action.

Because I already had a directional UHF antenna, installing the new Terk VHF/UHF antenna was as simple as could be. I extended the rabbit ears at in an appropriate V shape and just like that, reception was good again.

My original Terk HD-TVS broke after 2 years of great reception and I decided to try out the cheaper, smaller, indoor Terk HDTVi as its replacement.

It has been mediocre at best. I can only pick up 75% of channels with this antenna and it is placed right at a window facing the same direction as my previous Terk hd-tvs.

- made of high quality materials

- looks nice with brushed aluminum

CONS

- Large footprint: no pictures tell you that to get any decent reception at all you need to extend its rabbit ear antennas out as well, this really takes a lot more space with both rabbit ears extended 3-4ft in each direction and becomes an eye soar that can’t be hidden

- Has a built in coax cable(only 5ft long) to plug into your tv that cannot be exchanged or replaced. My hdtv is mounted on the wall and already has a 12 ft coax cable out that I was hoping to use directly into my antenna. Not possible without an adapter now. I can’t belive that a short built in cable would be included that can’t be replaced! It really limits where you can put this at.

- The base of the antenna is very unstable. Easily knocked over if just touched.

- Reception is just ok in comparison to my terk hd-tvs. I get 75% of the channels that I use to and the pictures comes in out much more frequently as I don’t think the signal is quite as strong.

Overall, this antenna is just going to be a temporary solution until my Terk HD-TVS can be fixed. I would not recommend to others unless you live extremely close the the towers and don’t need to extend the rabbit ears of this antenna out taking up precious space.

This Turk HDTVi antenna has been working very well for us. We live in the country more than 25 miles from the cluster of big city TV towers. We have a roof antenna for two TVs but had another TV that needed an upgraded indoor antenna. We like this HDTVi because it’s easy to hook up, easy to know where to aim it for best reception (point the narrow end in the direction of the TV towers), it has a reasonable price and we are getting a beautiful picture. Also, reading all of the reviews from others about the different antennas was very helpful in making our selection.

The product isn’t a “Smart” antenna as I was lead to believe. It’s just an enhanced regular antenna. If you’re looking for a smart antenna, this isn’t it. This antenna works a little better than my circular antenna, but I bet a smart antenna would work better.

I read all the reviews about this not being so great, but bought it anyway. Honestly, it doesn’t work better than rabbit ears. For me (I live in Brooklyn) it’s a little worse. Obviously would help to have a more directional antenna (I tried moving this around, but it didn’t help).

But I’m going to keep it. It looks way better than the rabbit ears, plus I don’t feel like dealing with the hassle of returning it.

Overall, I would rate this product highly. I used to own TERK antenna boosters. I had a sequence of two of those; I doubted how much the buttons and adjustments had any effect. By contrast, this 1550 antenna has boosted signals to steady clarity and has given me stations that I never had before, such as a PBS station 20 miles away.

They informed me that this antenna is a UHF antenna, even though it will receive a small VHF signal just by virtue of physics. So it worked just fine on the UHF signals, but I was already getting excellent reception from my original antenna. I must say that Amazon showed their usual class by allowing me to return the antenna for a full refund. So, I am writing this review just to warn you that this antenna is a UHF antenna.

This is a great anntena. We seen our neighbors had one and they said it really worked well, so we ordered on and installed it ourselves. We were real satisfied and our other neighbor seen it, and asked about it. I ordered one for them and helped them install it. This last one was for another neighbor. We installed that one too, and they are real happy with theirsd too. So our neighborhood has 4 of these anntenas already this summer. An excellant item !!

3 Stars Didn’t Work for Me
I ordered this antenna as a last ditch hope for “free air” television after the analog to digital goverment ordered switch over. It did not work for me. I live on the south side of a hill and the transmitters I needed to receive signal from were not only far away, over 60 miles, but were transmitting from the north. Apparently the new digital signal requires a better “line of sight” position than my roof top. I have now installed DirectTV and am enjoying 50 clear channels from the satellite which resides in the southern sky.

5 Stars free tv viewing
We got 18 channels at just above ranch-style-home roof height. We are about 40 miles from the Toledo, Ohio stations. We only got 9 channels with our tv top box and home made hanger antenna. You still need the tv top box if you do not have hd tv, to unscramble the signal. You get a nice weather channel, and a guide channel in this area as well. We were missing a screw, and they got it to us within the week.

5 Stars GREAT Reception!
For years we had an RCA VHF/UHF antenna mounted to our chimney, but it came down Easter weekend of 2009 from a tornado. Since several of the Nashville stations had already began broadcasting digitally, we were really enjoying digital TV. For a replacement I decided to try a DB8 from Antennas Direct, but it failed to live up to its reviews (don’t get me started). It was only UHF and upper VHF and none of the stations were all that strong.

Well… it’s a new day and a new antenna. Got the HD8200U from Amazon and it really sucks! That’s a good thing! It sucks in every broadcast station in middle Tennessee. It’s pulling in over 10 different stations, most of which are broadcasting with subchannels. I now have 23 different channels/sub-channels to choose.

Part of what makes this antenna work so well is its size. This is a BIG antenna. It’s 14′ long and over 9′ at the widest. But, it was amazingly easy to assemble and install. It is very light weight and well balanced. I installed it myself – took about hour to assemble it and then another hour or so to get it installed. Do not even think about installing it with anything stronger than a breeze. It accepts a 2″ pole, but I just used a 1-1/4″ top pole from a chain-link fence. Worked great. Oh, this is without any amplifier and it’s split to three TVs. Most stations are pegged around 98% signal strength with a couple around 85%

Now that I’ve gushed over how great it is, let me say a few things that really ticked me off. They’re minor, but very annoying. 1) Ordered the antenna and one of the vanes was installed backwards at the factory. It was riveted on so I couldn’t correct it. Because of this, it wouldn’t lock in to place. Returned it to Amazon and had them ship another. 2) Second antenna was OK, but there were some nuts and bolts missing. Had to make a trip to Home Depot to get what was missing.

At any rate, I’m very pleased with the reception and how easily the installation went. Except for the two problems, it’s about as perfect as can be. While this isn’t a cheap antenna, it’s a whole lot cheaper than paying for cable or satalite each month!

2 Stars Big Disappointment
I used the Winegard web site for their recommendations and followed it by the letter. Antenna must be assembled on the ground. Impossible to do on the roof. It is big and bulky so have at least another person to help you get it to the mounting position. The signal strength is worse than the 20 year old antenna I had in the attic which was 1/2 the size. I get fewer stations with the new Winegard than I got prevoius old antenna. The new antenna is outside and 20 ft higher than the old and pointing in the same direction. Big expense, poor results. May work fine if you are in a strong signal area but I bought it to improve recepption as I am out 50-60 miles.

3 Stars Rather Disappointed
This unit was purchased to replace a 20+ year old antenna that was somewhat corroded and had several bent or missing elements. The old antenna was pulling in all of the local Baltimore stations well, but reception of Washington DC area channels (particularly UHF) was spotty at best. After reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews here and elsewhere, I had high hopes that the HD-8200U would improve my reception substantially.

As others have noted, the instructions do leave a bit to be desired. With careful review and some common sense, though, assembly is not too difficult. In general, the antenna appears to be well constructed. I did encounter one manufacturing issue, however, when attempting to join the front and rear sections. A bolt hole that had been punched in the tube had not been done so cleanly. The result was a large “burr” on the inside of the tube that needed to be broken off and filed down before the parts could be put together.

After completing assembly and mounting the unit in the same orientation as the previous antenna, I hurried into the house – anxious to check out signal strengths and rescan for any additional channels. I was surprised to find that I had in fact lost several stations. The receiver was no longer detecting DC channels 4, 5, 20, and 66 at all. I spent considerable time adjusting the antenna rotor, but to no avail. Signal strengths for all of the local stations (both UHF and VHF) are quite good but about the same as with the old antenna.

I am not running a preamplifier, but I really expected this unit to perform at least as well as my previous weather-worn, beat up antenna without one. This has been a waste of both time and money for me.

5 Stars It’s in the attic
I live 30 miles from Chicago.

Before purchasing this antenna I read all the reviews. Most of the concerns that people seemed to have had nothing to do with the antenna, but actually centered around the flimsy cardboard box it was shipped in. When our antenna arrived the box was loose at both ends and there were a few nuts rolling free in the box that could have very easily fallen out. But we lucked out and everything was there.

By the way – we utilized the super free shipping that Amazon offers. The antenna arrived a couple of days after we ordered it.

We put the antenna in the attic of our two story home. Our home is surrounded by larger houses and lots of very tall trees. We get all our normal channels, plus a few I never knew existed. I was concerned that, with such a powerful antenna, we might pick up too many channels and they would spill over on each other, but since this antenna is very directional, that has not happened.

I am very pleased with this antenna. It feels like I’ve purchased a lifetime of free reception for the mere cost of about three months of cable TV.

By the way, be careful when exiting your attic. My ladder slipped and I fell out of the attic. But don’t worry! I’m okay….just pulled a muscle in my arm while trying to break the fall.
