Samsung ultra-slim LED TVs combine breakthrough picture quality, eco-friendly design and advanced connectivity options that will keep you entertained 24/7. USB 2.0 movie – multi-media center makes it easy to watch movies, browse photos and listen to music on your TV. The Samsung UN46B8000 LED HDTV also makes it easy to be green with up to 40% less power consumption than conventional LCDs.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Very pretty picture, some of the time.
The UN46B8000 is a very good display if space is an issue. However, it is not exactly what I was expecting. The store display I had seen was in open light and the display was connected to a Samsung BluRay player. This appears to be the key, as the display has some proprietary processing enabled for Samsung players. The 240Hz conversion gave the picture an odd life-like quality and I really liked it for CGI films. I figured that would translate well to games and I was tired of the poor black performance on my Aquos, so I picked up the set. A couple of things – first, even though this is touted as LED technology keep in mind that’s only for the backlight. The display tech is still LCD. You’re not getting per-pixel illumination. You’re getting edge-mounted backlighting supplied by LEDs. Second, the set is very laggy. The video has about a 150ms lag when all of the upscaling is turned off and ‘game mode’ is enabled to reduce lag. In full processing mode (240Hz, dynamic contrast, etc) the lag is over 500ms. If you don’t have a Samsung DVD player(which seems to correct it), this translates to noticable lag in video behind the audio track. Extremely annoying. And half a second makes playing games with any optimizations completely worthless. Lastly, the backlighting is blotchy in pure black situations with low ambient lighting. You don’t notice it much in normal store/room lighting, but when you turn out the lights the backlight produces soft ‘clouds’ of grey shift through a solid black field. There are some hot spots around the edge as well, where a small amount of light bleed occurs.

The display has a decent number of inputs, especially considering its size. Four HDMI, a component, and a VGA. The lack of a dedicated DVI was surprising, but the first HDMI port doubles as a DVI with a converter (all ports will work with HDPC compliant DVI outputs, but only the first port can handle a standard DVI-I/DVI-D signal from a non-HDPC source).

A word about signal range – this display is very strict when it comes to valid source. A receiver that gave me perfect performance at 1080p with my Aquos produces an invalid signal error with this display. A cheaper HDMI cable I was using for my PS3 produced nothing but static on the screen. I had to go get an official PS3 cable to get a correct 1080p display. My ZuneHD dock will NOT display at 720p, regardless of what I’ve tried. It works fine on other displays, but the Samsung won’t sync the signal. Very frustrating.

The extra features of the set may appeal to some, but I have no need for a terribly slow media streming service built into my set. Any dedicated media streaming station or game console is going to outperform the in-set features for DivX playback. The widgets were just a bad idea. I have a 50Mbps internet connection and they still take forever to load. They aren’t really useful and ‘typing’ with the remote is an exercise in self loathing.

Aesthetically, the set is incredible. The ultra-thin bezel is a thing of beauty. Glossy in the right places and stylish. You will most likely want to turn off the blue LED on the front of the set though, as it glows so bright it is a major distraction in low light situations. This is easily accomplished through the setup menu.

The remote is a mixed bag. Most people buying a set at this price point will probably have a universal anyway, but some may not. Samsung even recognizes that their remote is overly cumbersome and they include a second ‘mini’ remote for basic volume/channel/source features. The main remote has a motion sensor in it so whenever the slightest vibration occurs (such as a bass-heavy moment in a movie) it lights up. Getting up to get a snack? It lights up. Did your cat rub up against your coffee table? It lights up. The actual controls are pretty standard. There’s an iPod style jog wheel for navigating menus, but you’ll probably give up the poor performance of the circular motion for standard four point clicking. This leads to misinterpretation of your input sometimes, since the wheel will move slightly when clicking on the four points and the selector on screen will move as a result. I would have perferred a simple arrow interface. Part of the problem may be due to the fact that the menus are very laggy. Most operations on the display seem to be.

I can’t rate the audio because I don’t use the built-in speakers. Given the size of the set, I can’t imagine them being very good at anything but high to high-mid range. But I can’t say for certain.

Final verdict- If space or wow-factor are an issue, then this set certainly fits the bill if you can’t set up a high end projector. The blacks are decent and there are plenty of inputs. There are minor issues around the backlighting in low-light environments and it is not the best set for video gaming because of the lag. If you have a Samsung BluRay player you will get the most benefit out of this display. Other players will display noticable lag when some of the ‘wow’ features are turned on. If I had it to do over, I probably wouldn’t at this price point, but if some of the plusses are what you’re looking for it’s probably worth it. *** out of *****.

5 Stars Samsung 46″ LED UN46B8000
This tv replaced a Sony which I thought has excellent color till I got this one. I would like to first say the purchase and delivery were very good by Amazon and we received the TV 2 days earlier than scheduled. I rate the television as an excellent buy for quality, looks, dollar, and performance. The colors are definitely striking. The setup of the television and the internet connection were very easy. The internet connection was to my wireless system via use of the wireless adapter which would have been nice to have included with the tv but as everyone does I purchased it separately. Of course the true test will be over time but I feel it will perform very well.

4 Stars Picture clarity is stunning with Digital or HD
I only gave this 4 stars because 5 stars represents “perfect” to me, and I doubt any product out there made is “perfect”.

First of all I like most am not rich and this kind of money for a tv is insane. But if you’ve decided to upgrade your older lcd (or) finallys witch from your crt, and you were planning to try and spend around $1000 or $1200 tops, I’d really suggest you wait, if it takes 6 months, wait, and save enough money for a great tv like this.

I searched online for the best reviewed tv’s in the price range I could afford, and like most of you I wandered into the tv section of Walmart and other stores to see the screen definition and prices of various tv’s out there. I decided if I’m going to make this expensive transition I’m going to wait a few months until I could get the tv I really wanted. Well I finally have my un46B8000 and find myself watching commercials cuz they look so cool !

First of all I am a long time user of Tivo. Mine was the standard digital 2 drive version so I decided to upgrade and order the new XL HD tivo. In the week while I waited for it’s delivery, I was watching my usual cable digital channels on this new tv. It’s IMPORTANT to note that the digital picture is just stunning on this tv… without the HD channels. Shows look oddly different, like many yrs ago when they switched to video taping our nightly comedy shows instead of filming them…. and I remember how odd the picture looked in video.. it was unusually clear and realistic… Well I’m experiencing that again with this new tv.. Just watching Two and a Half Men, the new picture clarity baffles and stuns me! it’s like watching a whole new program! and digital commercials, I actually find myself rewinding to watch them! it’s just odd !!

The color intensity and clarity are stunning and THERE IS NO DAMN HUM !!!

Also I find the speakers quite adequate though I’m hooking up the new Samsung soundbar (with blu-ray) to this tv today… but the speaker quality of this tv doesn’t bother me at all. Plus you can fine tune the sound to your liking.

Setup is easy especially with an HDMI cable – one cable! (depending on your setup). For me it’s the normal cable out of the wall into my Tivo, then the HDMI cable out from my TIVO and into the back of the TV, and wah-lah.. it’s done. (Only the HD TIVO’s have the HDMI connector).

CONS: the directions, the booklet and the website suck – Most of us have hooked electronics up before so you can figure it out but if you’re a beginner.. good luck with that! There’s no excuse for the lack of info in the huge booklet and the Samsung website – there is more info on this amazon.com page above about this tv than there is in the book (or) on Samsung’s site.

CONS: I don’t like the remote, glad I have my great Tivo remote. ex: if you want to adjust the color saturation, you’d like to see the picture on screen while you’re doing it so you know how much to adjust it.. but sadly this stupid remote and tv have this big pop up screen that blocks the entire tv picture while your making your settings! so dumb- I find myself making a setting then clicking “exit” so I can view my change, then go back into the “menu” several times to set/change it some more. This is a minor issue I guess because once you have your chosen settings you’ll rarely fix it again, but still it’s a dumb setup. My remote also skips around on that menu screen without me clicking anything.. (a flaw in mine or all of them?) again not a big deal once it’s setup but it skips around badly..

PROS: In the menu there are 4 choices for a picture to choose from, “Dynamic”, “Standard”, “Natural”, and “Movie”. The pro here is that those could simply be called 1-2-3-4 instead because once you choose one of those above, you can scroll down and change what they are. Meaning you can scroll down and change the color saturation, tint, contrast, etc for each of those items. My tv is in a very bright room so I set one setting (standard) for day viewing and made a darker screen choice (natural) for night time, which is more soothing to my eyes.

Some of the menu settings may confuse you but you need to just play with it, curse a little, and you’ll figure it out.

PROS: there is a “backlight” setting which I am amazed I can keep rather low. My tv is in a very bright room, approx 12′ from a 8′x8′ patio door where I let lots of light in for my indoor plants everyday.. I am stunned how well I can see this tv in this bright light WITHOUT changing to any bright setting. This bright room was the main reason I hesitated for so long from upgrading my tv because I was worried this bright room would be too much for a new lcd (or plasma).. well this tv is amazing in a light environment.

CONS: again the remote – some shows you are still watching in 4:3 ratio mode (old square screen), otherwide the picture looks too stretched out. Then there are shows that are easily viewed in 16:9 (wide screen). You need to go all the way into the menu to change this setting if you want a dif screen for dif tv shows, (click “menu” then “Mode” then scroll down to “Picture Options” then choose “size”) — it’s insane to have to go through all that to change the screen/picture size. Again, my award winning tivo remote (!!) has this feature as one of it’s buttons easily accessed right on the remote .. just click “aspect” and I can change the aspect ratio of any program I’m watching.. But for those of you with just this tv’s remote, you’ll need to go through all those steps I listed above to keep changing the aspect ratio – annoying! (Their remote and “menu” are a big reason I couldn’t give this tv 5 stars)

PROS: the tv is light weight enough I could lift it. The base which you must attach is as heavy as the tv it seemed, but it all looks stunning once set up.

CONS: price – ridiculous! I found it elsewhere and saved $300 off Amazon’s price. I use Amazon to buy lots of items of all types but for something like this I searched google and ebay for a better price (and found it on ebay). Be sure to consider delivery costs (and tax where applicable) when choosing where to buy it.

PROS: thin beyond belief

PROS: blacks are so black that even on a limited black setting, the screen edges (when watching 4:3 ration) are as black as the actual tv frame..

PROS: it’s a nice looking tv. chrome base with a thick glass stem leading up to the tv. A bright, deep, flourescent blue light shows at the bottom when the tv is turned on – pleasing to the eye.. oh and the tv hums a slight tune when you turn it off and on!

PROS: I have no glare problems in this bright room next to this huge patio door.

CONS: You really do need to be almost dead center when watching this tv for the best picture

PROS: The swivel stand is very helpful to put you dead center for viewing. (Although I’m usually approx 3′ off dead center (to the side), approx 10′-12′ distance from the tv, and the pic is still spectacular).

CONS: there is no S connection on the back (if you need one) and the other connections are setup squashed into a side panel.. not the easiest to connect and some thicker connectors may not work on this tv (as mentioned in this indepth review below)

[...]

That article (above) is the most indepth info I found on this tv before I bought it.

One last thing. With the new HD Tivo’s you need to get rid of the cable box and use cable cards. When the cable guy came out yesterday he had been installing cable cards (in new Tivo’s) all morning. When he came in and first viewed my tv which was turned on, after spending all morning in front of other people’s lcd/plasma tv’s all morning, he took one look at my tv picture and simply said, “wow”. That was his first impression walking up to it and seeing it’s clear picture! (and keep in mind it was still on a regular cable digital picture, not HDMI yet). So basically, after seeing all those other tv’s all morning in everyone else’s home.. he was blown away by my new Samsung UN46B8000 ! So there! I have bragging rights! lol.

So when watching HD channels or your digital channels you should be very pleased with this tv.

46″ is a pretty big tv imo. This old lady loves NFL and watching Brett Favre and Eli Manning has been great on this new LED LCD tv. The 2 ms response time is impressive, the color intensity is indescribable, the clarity, and the contrast is spectacular when watching football. You will need to go into your menu settings and tweak all these features to your liking (sound, contrast, tint, color, black levels, backlight, sharpness, etc.)

[...]

4 Stars Nice but not perfect
I got this TV a week ago on big sale from Amazon. Have it hooked up to Comcast HD box, OPPO Blue Ray player, Apple TV (iTunes and my photos) and Roku (Netflix and Amazon streaming). This TV also streams natively from Blockbuster. This represents most of today’s sources of interest.

The good:

- Very thin and light

- Good design, looks nice

- Picture is good, much better then my non-LED Sharp Aqua (2008 high end model)

- Blacks are really black

- Good picture on both HD and SD, and with all sources listed above

Not so good:

- Screen is very reflective, but it’s only a problem if you have a lot of light shining directly on the screen during the day

- Speakers are awful, you really need external audio

- There is some “flashing” but it only affects scenes that are >95% pure black, such as small titles on black background with nothing else. Not really a big problem.

- On very dark scenes there is some light bleeding around the edges, but it only bothersome at significant off center angels

- Internet features are very slow, take a long time to do anything. On the other hand it can stream directly from Blockbuster.

Over all nice TV, no major problem except very reflective screen.

1 Star Samsung has faulty power boards that fail in 14 months!
Beware! Review internet tech and review sites for Samsung power board failures prior to purchasing. 14 months after purchase of a new LCD HDTV from Samsung, two hdmi ports have failed (causes green vertical lines on the tv screen) and the power board failed (the tv won’t even turn on).

Sadly Samsung is using old/cheap capacity resistors on the power boards which conveniently fail once the 1 year warranty has run out. Despite the resistor manufacturer recommending not to use them anymore back in 1999.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Excellent TV!
This is a top notch HDTV for an excellent price… well below the equivalent at a Best Buy.

To begin with, this TV is attractive even when off. When on, the screen is bright and crisp. I’ve had no problems using it with either my PS3 or Wii… the “game mode” seems to do its job very well in minimizing the lag common in HDTVs. Assassin’s Creed looks amazing, as does Mario Galaxy.

The TV has very full customizeability of picture, and I’ve had no problem making dark movies bright enough.

Contrary to some of the reviews here, I think the speakers are very satisfactory. They don’t have a completely full bass sound, no, but they are plenty loud for my apartment. Despite a lack of deep bass the speakers give generally full sound, and do a good job mimicking surround output. A little tip – turning on the “true surround” feature lowers the volume by quite a bit. Sound a little quiet? Then turn off the surround setting and “settle” with excellent stereo sound… at volume 45 the TV is plenty loud (and it goes to 100). I compared the sound of various TVs at Best Buy and I honestly think this little unit has phenomenal sound for its size class… if you want better speakers built into a ~3″ deep flat screen, well you are probably going to have to go for a fatter and larger TV. What do you want for such a slim unit?

The TV not having 1080P output isn’t much of a con… most TVs this size do not offer that, and when they “do” it is usually just a downscaling of 1080P signal to the screen rather than truly displaying it. 720P and 1080i look pretty darn slick compared to a CRT analogue TV, let me tell you! Again, the PS3 looks awesome.

So – good sound for the size-class, crisp bright screen, high contrast, good performance on games… all for ~$[...]!

It should have an S-video input. I’m not sure why it doesn’t. That made me a little sad, but I knew it didn’t when buying it. Just upgrade to component or HDMI where possible if you’ve got an s-video device

I have one real con for this TV – NOWHERE did I see this indicated – the TV has a completely unadjustable stand. On larger TVs, the stands don’t have to be adjustable because their viewing angles are so large. But a smaller TV at 22″ with a 160 degree viewing angle… it really does need to be able to tilt. I have it up on a dresser so I tucked some cardboard under the rear of the base to give it a slight tilt down. Thankfully the bright screen and decent viewing angles make this an acceptable arrangement, but if you have an off-optimal location for your TV consider the lack of adjustability when buying.

Still – excellent TV with better picture than a lot of the ones I’ve seen in stores. Definite steal at this price

4 Stars 22-inch LCD TV
This Samsung 22-inch LCD TV is used in a bedroom and replaced an old CRT TV. It has a much superior picture, was easy to set up, and other than for the common problem with most LCD TVs of viewing angle, is perfectly satisfactory.

5 Stars Better than expected!!!!WOW
Contrary to what the listing states in terms of resolution. This LCD was able to support a top resolution of 1920×1080 (full HD), when hooked to my slim PS3 unit.

Wow…

Clear picture at an affordable price.

You can’t beat that!!!

5 Stars great quality right out of the box
Purchased through Amazon….Just hook up the cable wires, plug this thingie in, and you have a great looking, extroadinary color HDTV. Nice size for our bedroom….great design, takes up little space. What more can you want…..very very nice product.

4 Stars Great buy!
This flatscreen is everything I was looking for in a tv for my bedroom. I love the 3 alarms on any day of the week you choose and channel and even volume. Only con is the speakers aren’t that great, but I expected that from other reviews I read. Overall great buy!

1 Star Samsung HDMI Port and Power Board Failure after Warranty!
Before purchasing google the tech/repar sites for the hundreds/thousands of dis-satisfied customers that have had hdmi port and power board failure.

Conveniently for Samsung this usually only occurs after the warranty had run out.

I have a 2008 Samsung LCD HDTV that has had two hdmi ports and the power board fail.

The most ridiculous part of all of this – is that Samsung continues to use old/cheap capacity resistors on their boards (ones the manufacturer said were obsolete back in 1999 – ten years ago!).

5 Stars Great tv and Service
I just made a purchase through electronics expo. At first I was debating on going with a 60hz set, to save some money. Then I stopped by my local best buy and they had this model and also the b550 which was the other series I was considering. Seeing them side to side, it was obvious that the 630 was the one to buy. The picture was bright, no motion blur, deep blacks, an all around great set. I got home to price shop on amazon and came across electronics expo, so I gave them a call. We were able to settle on a price that fit my budget and it was shipped out promptly. I am very happy with this set and would recommend it to anyone looking for an amazing 120hz tv.

3 Stars Be sure to budget for expensive repairs
The downside of Amazon.com reviews is that they deal with delivery, setup, and performance–but not long-term reliability. I own last year’s version of this unit–the LN-T4669F. And if you look up my review there, I say I love it. And well I should say so. Just like the current model, the performance–and bang for the buck–are great.

But. After owning it a year and a half the power supply went zzzzzt! and now, $350 and two weeks in the shop later, it’s as good as new. Of course it was out of warranty, and Samsung said I’m on my own.

To be fair to Samsung, the local service guy (who has great ratings, dramatically unlike Samsung’s recommended shop in my area) says that these big screen TVs are not as reliable as our old CRT TVs were. Less mature technology, he says. And he said Samsung isn’t less reliable than other mainstream LCD TVs. Also that the Japanese manufacturers’ units have gotten less reliable overall, as units from other countries have gotten better. Also, though I live in a very mild climate, I did run my TV for many, many hours.

So my point is that you should be prepared for occasional trips to the repair shop.

But another but: We’ve now bought two Samsung devices, and both have shown reliability problems. The other one was a DVD recorder (DVD-VR357), which was flakey and got flakier by the month. We replaced it with a Toshiba DVD recorder, which has been 100% reliable during long, hard usage, as have been several Toshiba laptops. So maybe our 46″ Samsung TV is no worse than other flat screen units, maybe it is. I don’t know. But the next time we get a flat screen I plan to think long and hard about a Toshiba. And also to dig around more for reliability ratings, such as the ones Consumer Reports publishes.

I might also consider one of those extended warranties, though most consumer advocates say they’re a ripoff for most products. But maybe not for flat screen TVs?

5 Stars Not Really Surprised
I had a 40″ Samsung (LN4061) for just over a year and a half and was totally sold on the matte screen and quality of the picture. When this unit was stolen in a burglary I knew that I wanted another Samsung. I decided to get a 46″ model as I was no longer constrained by a width requirement. I also wanted a matte screen as there are no window coverings here. If you are concerned about glare, the matte screen models will make a believer of you.

I ordered a returned unit that was without some accessory that apparently isn’t needed. It was delivered on time and the person stayed until I checked out the unit.

I am absolutely sold on Samsung and don’t hesitate to tell friends and relatives about them. The 120Hz screen refresh rate is impressive. I haven’t seen a 240Hz model, but I can imagine how much of an improvement they are.

I also don’t mind not having to pay tax on items bought through Amazon.

5 Stars Samsung 46 inch HDTV
I received the TV very promptly and am really enjoying it. It has a great picture and I feel it was a great value.

5 Stars Best HDTV for the Money
Samsung Plasma is the best HDTV for the price on the market. Forget the war between LCD and Plasma. You can not compare the picture qualities between the two. Plasma shows much more depth and natural lighting. The picture looks sharp and real. On the other hand, LCD looks sharp, shallow, and fake – due to little light, and hence, barely lively. Samsung makes the best Plasma for the money. Pioneer makes a little better plasma but cost twice for the same size TV.

3 Stars Great, but still prone to burn in.
The Good:It is a great set for the money. You just can’t touch a good 1080P 120-240Hz LCD or LED t.v. in this size for this price range. There are plenty of connections, although if you have a 50″ t.v. you really just need one hdmi input and maybe an optical out if you need to run sound back to a decent receiver. The picture quality is amazing when watching Blu Ray movies or other 1080p sources.

The Neutral: Which brings me to the sound. Other people have taken marks off for the sound of the built-in speakers. I haven’t found them to be that bad considering they are in the back of the t.v. for aesthetic purposes. Speakers are always going to sound muffled when they are facing away from you. I would say again, if you have a t.v. this big you should also invest in a decent receiver and a set of speakers. You can’t get the full theater effect with the two little speakers that come on any t.v. you purchase. The built in speakers in this t.v. are adequate for watching the news or other programs where surround sound isn’t going to greatly improve the viewing experience anyway.

The Bad: The plasma sets are still having issues with burn in. I didn’t realize it was such a problem until I unpacked this and skimmed through my manual. In the very front of the manual it tells you things that can cause burn in. It covers almost every use you could think of for a t.v. Off the top of my head, here were some of the things that were included:

- Watching a t.v. show with a channel logo or stock ticker (all the cable news channels have tickers)

- Playing video games (Think of title screens, pause screens, and in game stat bars)

- Using the t.v. as a computer monitor (This is probably the worst since there are almost always parts of your screen that will stay the same for long periods of time.)

- Watching DVDs (I am assuming they are referring to leaving it on the title screen either while getting all you snacks and stuff ready or falling asleep during the movie and letting the title screen stay on after it is over.)

All of the aforementioned activities will void your warranty for screen burn in. So basically, if you get screen burn-in they aren’t going to cover it. Both of the stars I took off were for this reason. If I spend this kind of money on something that is strictly for entertainment I want to be able to thoroughly enjoy using it at all times and not have to worry that by playing my favorite game for a few hours I could permanently destroy my screen. It takes the enjoyment out of it when you are constantly paranoid about burn in.

There are a couple of things that this set can do to help prevent burn in. There is the pixel shift which can shift the picture up to 4 pixels away and do so as frequently as once per minute. I have this set on the max and I have not noticed the shift yet even when looking for it. The problem with this solution is that many stationary images are going to have bars that are a lot bigger than 4 pixels in any direction. So even with the shift, the same color will most likely be on any given pixel in that area.

The other tool they provide you with is a screen wipe that you can run through the remote that will scroll different shades of black and white across the screen in what I would describe as a digital eraser. I tried it last night after playing Fallout 3 for a few hours and being paranoid that the life bar would burn in to the screen. It seemed to work well and it’s possible if you use that at the first sign of burn in that you could prevent permanent damage. Again, it’s just something that you shouldn’t have to worry about constantly.

5 Stars Great TV, (believe me) poor sound
I used to own a consumer electronics repair shop representing several brands. The following are my thoughts regarding this Samsung HDTV set.

1. Excellent picture quality. Cannot ask for better.

2. Poor sound. Speakers seem to small for the task of main speakers. Suitable for voice (news).

3. Lack of a s-video input connector.

4. Lack of multichannel (eg. 5.1) sound from the optical audio connector. Only two channels will output.

5. Closed captions only available with sources connected thru the RF connector.

6. In my case, incompatibility with my Scientific Atlanta DVR (cable) when using HDMI. The TV will force the HD programming to 480i. I had to connect the DVR using the Component Video inputs.

I still rated this HDTV as five stars because I think that the main function of a TV set is to show a great picture. No doubt, this HDTV set excels in that. Also, there are many others good and useful features in this set that I didn’t mentioned that make the few drawbacks in the above list bearable.

Note: Screen burn-in is a fact of life with all plasma displays. This set has features to help minimize it.

5 Stars good TV, great PQ,
I spent a lot of time researching before purchasing this TV. I was on the border line between LCD and Plasma, but finally I pulled the trigger to buy this set. Over all this is a great TV with a beautiful PQ. However, there are a few flaws such as buzzing, making noise when turn on/off. AFAIK, all plasmas make noise while operating, with this set the buzzing is really noticeable at night when the volume is low; maybe I’m too sensitive. Also, when turning on/off the TV there’s a weird noise from the back. Nevertheless, for the price that I got ($925) with free shipping and no tax, it’s a great deal.

5 Stars Samsung Plasma HDTV
After reading several reviews we decided to purchase this TV from Amazon because of the cost. The product is just what we wanted. The company shipped it and set it up for us. Its great. It takes up less space than our previous 50 inch television, so there is more space for us in the living room.

4 Stars Fantastic Purchase!
I’ve had this tv for about a month now and it’s great. It has superb clarity and the colors are vibrant. Definitely on par with or better than Sony and LG, especially for the price. My only negative comment is the sound. Maybe I’m going deaf or my space is too large, but I have to turn the volume up much higher than I’m used to…I’ve added my Bose speakers out of fear of busting the tv’s. Overall, great tv!

5 Stars all around winner.
Great tv. great price for what you get. Picture is fantastic – colors crisp and bright, definition is sharp for all colors/shades. I have direcTV HD. Cant see how much better this picture will get but it definitely will bridge the game for several years. I don’t use other built in features like gaming to speak abt them. Sound is solid. normal viewing is at about 25% of limit. Tones are balanced and clear. for larger sound i go thru a stereo receiver. one sound quirk – the auto volume adjustment takes a couple of seconds to kick in; but that’s nit-picking.

4 Stars Great HD picture and great service from Crutchfield
First I want to say how impressed I am with Crutchfield. When I purchased this unit through Amazon I really didn’t pay much attention to who the actual seller was since it received the standard free shipping. I purchased this on a Saturday morning. With in 2 hours I received a phone call from Crutchfield thanking me for my purchase and explaining how the unit would be shipped, etc. I was very impressed with this and would absolutely purchase from Crutchfield in the future.

As for the Samsung – The picture is great with HD. I got it primarily for sports and the HD channels look great. Some of the standard def channels are not so spectacular but I don’t necessarily think that is a fault of the Samsung, I think it is more a Directv issue. I have an issue giving anything 5 stars but if you are looking for an LCD in this size range you should take a look at this one.

2 Stars dissapointed
i guess my other samsung must be 120mhz cause the picture is not nearly as good as my two year old samsung. wonder if i can return this for a better model? I mean,it pic is ok but not even close to my 46 samsung from two years ago. i just assumed any new model would be better.

4 Stars Samsung 40 inch 1080p LCD HDTV
This is a great TV. The only thing that I found disappointing is the particular model I purchased did not come with the side inputs for hooking up my digital camera or camcorder etc. Getting to the back of the TV is an inconvenience and it also results in less input options.

It’s my first flat screen so I wasn’t aware that this would be an issue.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Not bad for under $500
For the price this is a nice tv. I have a 1080p Samsung and there is a difference in picture quality compared to this 720p. The colors are brighter and crisper in the 1080p, but the picture is ok in 720p.The only problem is you must look at picture straight on, because from side angle you see a picture but it has very little color. This tv is made for a small bedroom, because factory sound is not to loud

5 Stars Might as well get the best
After comparing to the 32 inch samsung from the 3 series below and to comparable lg 32 inch sets I made my decision and went with this. I couldn’t be happier. If you’re looking around and this is in your options, don’t waste your time spend a little extra for a tv you know you’ll be happy with.

4 Stars Pretty good, but some Issues
I recently bought this tv to replace my old 19 inch RCA tv. Keep in mind, the RCA still works great to this day, but I thought it was about time to upgrade.

Putting it Together:

This is the main problem I experienced with this tv. It came with 8 identical screws. The 4 that go into the tv went in fine, but the 4 that go into the stand did not fit. I used all my effort to turn them, but they would not go in. Either the screws were too big, or the holes in the stand were too small. I emailed Samsung customer support and they told me to buy new screws online. I was not pleased with this response. When you spend $500 plus on a name brand tv, you expect it to come with parts that actually fit together. I emailed them again and didn’t get a response. Finally I decided to go to the local hardware store. I got some screws which were a little smaller and they fit perfectly. So overall, this is something to keep in mind about this model.

TV Appearance:

The Samsung tv looks very nice from the outside. I was worried about the red tint being too much, but it is barely noticeable which is good. The tv looks all black unless you look closely at it from certain angles, then you can see a tint of red. The touch buttons and clear stand look very nice.

Picture:

The picture on this set is very clear. I tried it using antennae reception and cable, and it looks great on both. When I 1st turned on the tv, the picture was choppy, but I think it just had to warm up because it has been clean ever since. There are lots of options to adjust the picture, but the preset settings look fine.

Sound:

The sound is pretty good. I had to play around with the settings to find one I liked, but once I had it picked out, it sounded good.

Remote:

The remote is ok. It only took a couple minutes to figure out how to use all the buttons. Changing the channels is a bit slow compared to my old tv, but it’s not a big deal.

Features:

There are plenty of features on this tv, some are useful, some not so much. The energy savings modes probably wont be used because they dim the picture and I doubt most people want to sacrifice picture brightness to save on energy.

Amazon Service:

I purchased this tv from Amazon (there are other sellers on this site, but I ordered from Amazon). The 1st package that came was damaged during shipping. Not to worry, I was able to send it back for a replacement. Get this, I expected it to take another week for the replacement to show up, but it arrived within 24 hours of placing the order! How is that for good customer service!

5 Stars Great TV; Great Delivery
I read mountains of information before deciding on this TV…I am not a video-techno- know -it -all…I was just looking for a good price for a good tv….I decided first to get Samsung and then finally decided on this model.

I was thrilled with the quality of the tv…its features and the picture and the audio.

The delivery Was fast and professional; they called shortly before they delivered to make sure someone would be at home.

I am very satisfied with this purchase.

1 Star A miserable experience
My 32 inch Samsung LCD was great for five months then died a spectacular death. While watching it one day, a huge spark arced out of the top of the TV, and it was absolutely dead. That was the start of my trouble as warranty service was horrendous. I made nearly two dozen phone calls to Samsung, their warranty service contractor and the various technicians. Scheduled service visits would result in no one showing up. It took nearly a month and a half to get replacement parts installed. I’ll never buy a Samsung product again.

5 Stars Top of the line
Had this TV for about a week and it lives up to the hype. I’ve never seen a tv with a blacker black. My wife’s first comment when it was pulled of the box: “Wow, that is thin!”. Amazing that they can fit such a fantastic product into 1.5″ of depth. The only thing I would note is that I did see what some say about the light bleeding in from the edge. I noticed it at night during an almost completely black scene. I actually didn’t notice it until I thought to look based on others’ comments, and it’s very discrete. It doesn’t degrade the viewing experience at all. If that’s something that would bother you, stop looking at your tv and start watching your tv.

5 Stars Amazing TV – will not disappoint!! UPDATED 9/23
UPDATED BELOW 9/23/09…

I have had this TV for about 2 weeks now and could not be more pleased! My A/V setup was in place when it arrived and all I had to do was connect the HDMI to start watching television. I am running HD cable (HDMI), Wii (Component), Blu Ray (HDMI), and a camera (HDMI) all through the Denon AVR-1910. Only the HDMI out from the Denon to the TV is needed as it switches and upconverts all video.

So after I plugged it in, cable channels started appearing…except for 2 HD channels – just got a black screen. I spent 45 minutes adjusting resolution ins/outs on the cable box, receiver, and TV to no avail. Finally, I rebooted the cable box, and there they were. Yes, I should have tried that first. Anyway, everything has been running without issue.

I must say, this picture is flat out gorgeous. I spent a lot of time researching TV’s and checking them out in the stores; LG, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, LCD, LED, etc… but I always came back to this Samsung LED line of sets. I had read reviews talking about “searchlights” in the corners, and conversely, dark spots in the corners. The former issue I never really saw firsthand. The dark spots though, I did notice in the stores. It seemed more prevalent on the 8000 series, and in some cases I didn’t see them at all. When it came down to it though, I found the overall picture so stunning that the dark areas didn’t affect me (it was REALLY subtle). I was also suspicious that the sets in the stores that are constantly turned on may have something to do with it. I am pleased to say that I don’t see any artifacts on my new set. The picture brightness is very uniform throughout. Couldn’t be happier! If you’ve seen these TV’s firsthand you know the thinness of the set is beyond compare. Mine is on a stand, but on the wall it would look amazing (too bad speakers aren’t this thin).

As far as the picture goes, if you are pushing an HD signal to it…WOW! The picture is so vivid, bright, and detailed some scenes truly start to look 3-dimensional. Not sure what effect I’m really seeing but that’s what it looks like. We had friends over and the kids were watching Kung Fu Panda in HD. All the guys were standing there behind the kids mumbling about the amazing picture. Standard def pictures look fine as well, certainly better than my old DLP. But make no mistake, the payoff is in the HD content.

So I find myself tweaking the picture each day….2 notches lower on the color, 1 higher on the gamma, 1 more for backlight, etc… it’s pretty much at the point where all channels look fabulous and I don’t need to adjust anything else. I’d say, expect to do that on any TV you get. I tried a cnet configuration that they recommend for dark room viewing and I hated it! Immediately switched back to my personal settings. The great thing is that the accurate colors and different configurable settings on this TV provide the flexibility that makes it nearly impossible NOT to get a perfect picture! BUT everyone’s TV room, own eyes, and preferences are a little different. Because there are so many setting combinations, finding the perfect configuration for you will just take a little time – don’t expect to have it straight out of the box. As far as contrast goes, awesome! In a scene of Iron Man (Blu Ray), when Tony Stark crashed his own companies party, Jeff Bridges is wearing a tux with a white scarf. I could see the ever-so-slightest off-color herringbone pattern in the scarf next to the black jacket – and it wasn’t a close up. (Not kidding, it was kind of neat!)….so just based on that scene, I’d say the contrast and sharpness are top notch.

The 120hz motion effect is great as well. If you haven’t yet, go see a demonstration in the store – you really need to see it to understand the hype. It is definitely pretty cool, but I have added some blur and judder back into my settings because it kind of freaked my wife out a little bit. Incredibly smooth, but definitely not how you’d see a movie in the theater. Many scenes end up looking fake, or like you’re standing there watching a play on stage. Just know that it’s completely adjustable or can be shut off entirely. Again, your personal preference will dictate the settings.

I’m also happy to say that the Denon upconverts the Wii video nicely and it pops out on the Samsung in full-screen looking great. I imagine PS3 or XBOX games with HD output look as good as Blu Ray. I also got the wireless adapter and hooked up to my Windows Media Center to browse pics and movies. Works great – no issues there.

The only oddity that I have seen is the fluctuating back light during dark scenes. Other reviews point this out as well. If a scene goes really dark, like rolling the first credits after the movie, yes, the entire screen will dim. Switch back to a bright scene and the brightness pops back on. When it happens it’s noticeable, but it doesn’t happen often. I only see it in an extreme contrast change as described above. In my opinion this is a small price to pay when 99.9% of the experience is breathtaking.

Overall, this set delivers an incredible picture that is hard to beat. I read a lot of professional reviews and they always find a few negative things to focus on, like “the moir

5 Stars Gotta Love HDTV!
I love my Purchase. It looks great. The internal sound kinda sucks but when I get my external surround set up it will be fine. Great for TV and gaming.

SJQ

5 Stars Great Picture
This TV has a great picture. I did a lot of research before selecting plasma. I really don’t have problems with it being too dim, looks great. Lots of threads on [...] about how to break in and change picture settings to get best looking picture. Amazon customer service is great! If you are on the fence go for it!

4 Stars Fantastic tv with fantastic price
im really happy with this plasma for how much i paid for it, the color is AMAZING, the THX take you movie watching experience to the next level.

4 Stars Solid TV
Overall I’m pretty happy with my purchase of the Panasonic TC-P46G10. Sports (especially football and baseball games) look great on this thing. Movies look great too except the motion quality isn’t top notch. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good. But this is a G10 model, not a V10. Here are my pros/cons…

Pros:

- Competitive price.

- Excellent clarity and color quality.

- Great for gaming (very minor phosphour trails).

- Minimal Glare.

- Built-in burn-in retention (I fell asleep to a blu-ray and the menu screen was on the screen all night and there was not even a trace of burn-in).

Cons:

- Motion quality is not quite as smooth as 120hz or 240hz technology, or the V10’s 96hz.

- The 48hz feature is worthless, the flicker is unbearable.

- The screen smudges super easily, but fortunately comes with a special cloth to clean the screen.

Bottom line.. Great bang for your buck!

Hope this review helps someone.

5 Stars Great T.V.
46 inch Panasonic G10. I was able to schedule the delivery without extra cost and they set it up in just a few minutes. Amazing TV. Using ATT U-Verse TV and Internet. HD channels are simply amazing. For those buying from Amazon.com (which is what I recommend). Wait for the Panasonic Blu-ray special if that is important to you. It showed up 2-3 days after I purchased the T.V. Sometimes you have to click “reload” on your browser several times before it shows up in the “Special offers” section. A lot of other sites have this T.V. for a few bucks cheaper but Amazon’s customer service is probably the best, just in case you get a “bad” item. Great service, great price. Anyone will be pleased with this T.V.

When it comes to best image quality in a TV at an affordable range, Plasma screens deliver the best contrast ratio and color depth. This Viera plasma includes the new NEO plasma display panel with improved blacks and native contrast of 40,000:1. Neo PDP combines advances for plasma in cell structure, process technology, and new drive technology. Neo PDP is eco-friendly. It’s engineered to save power and double the luminance efficiency. It offers thinner screens than previous plasma flat panels. NEO technology screens are rated to have a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours. This is more than 30 years of viewing when watched for 8 hours a day, before the TV reaches half brightness. It also has 1080p resolution with 600Hz sub-field drive and Gaming Mode. With all these advances, why settle for an average picture when the Viera plasma display offers so much more. Did you know that some HDTVs deliver considerably less than 1080 lines of resolution, when processing fast motion on screen? VIERA S1 Series Plasma HDTVs ensure full-time 1080 TV lines of resolution, even during fast moving scenes in sports and movies. VIERA Image Viewer provides a better way to share your digital photos. Just pop your SD memory card into the handy slot, and instantly display your digital photos for friends and family to enjoy. With VIERA Link, you can control your compatible Panasonic DVD recorder, Blu-ray Disc player, home-theater sound system and HD camcorder, all with a single remote and helpful on-screen menus.
5 Stars Dollar for Dollar This is the Best Plasma TV You’ll Find
I own and love 50″ Pioneer (purchased two years ago) and this bedroom TV is almost as good for 1/3 the price. The delivery was quick and the set up was easy for this mechanically incompetent knucklehead. My only mistake was not buying an HDMI cable at the same time. I spent $50 for one at Radio Shack and later saw Amazon had one for $9.00!! You cannot go wrong, on any level, with this purchase from Amazon.

5 Stars Excellent Tv choice.
Purchased to replace my 40-inch samsung lcd. My lcd got a black line down the screen after the warranty was up so I went with plasma this time and what a difference. This tv is amazing. Has everything I need and the picture is great.

3 Stars Good but I expected better with all the Panasonic-plasma hype
I really shouldn’t complain…but why not? We have a Sony 46in 1080p, 2 yrs. old ($1,600 then), mid-level model. Image quality of HD stuff (Verizon FIOS, only transmits 1080i currently)knocks me out. Picture has resolution, detail, brightness, color..almost a feeling that you walk through the damn screen into the scene, a depth and ’solidity’ to objects, just breathtaking. And I haven’t gotten tired of the experience. (I do not work for SONY, no other disclosures). So for my 70th birthday, I decided to get a plasma 40-42in 1080p to watch “my stuff”: plasma picture is better, blacks this, color that, price. So I get the S1 and the picture doesn’t measure up to the SONY. I’ve adjusted/played with the modes, adjusted the brightness, saturation, sharpness parameters, etc., and only with some material, here and there, do I get the ‘SONY’ experience. Unfair comparison? Any Ideas?

1 Star Buyer Beware!
I am so disappointed to be giving this horrible review. I have been a long time Amazon shopper and this is my first bad experience. I cannot really fault Amazon, the problem lies solely with Panasonic, yet I am surprised this problem was not mentioned in user reviews which I rely heavily on.

I settled on this plasma set after six week of intensive research and visits to local retailers to see the model and talk to unbiased salespeople. Third party reviews by CNET confirmed that this set has the best picture quality of anything in its price range and handily outperforms comparable LCD models.

I received my set in two days from Sixth Avenue.com (through Amazon) and after setting it up found to my horror, the dreaded 7 blinking light signal. No picture whatsoever. Upon googling the problem I realized this has been a major problem with Panasonic sets for some time. My complaints were channeled from Amazon customer service, to 6th Ave, to Panasonic, and lastly to a local service company contracted by Panasonic. Two days later a technician diagnosed three failed parts and tells me it could take anywhere between two days and sixty! days to get parts. I am basically stuck with a brand new useless television occupying my living room.

I still believe this set is a superior product, once it gets up and running. The service tech convinced me that once fixed the chances of a reoccurrence of the problem are very low, and if it performs well for the first year, the chances of failure later on are also quite low. So, I am twiddling my thumbs and trying to cope with this dilemma. Had I purchased this product from a local store I would be able to demand an exchange. Since it was ordered on line and shipped, the company refuses to exchange it. Buyer beware.

4 Stars pretty good tv for the money
The Panasonic S1 series is a pretty good overall tv. the only thing I’m not a huge fan of is the anti-glare screen. the anti-glare is definatly noticably less reflective then your standard gloss plasma screen but the standard high gloss screen gives a little better picture. I have this tv in a basement and it would have been better with the gloss screen. If you have a moderatley lit room but want a plasma then this would be perfect for you. I cant coment on the sound as i’ve never herd the tv’s speakers I have evything run straight to a hometheater system. I would recomend this tv to a friend looking for a 40+” tv under $1000.

5 Stars Wow!!!
So I did a lot of research on LED tv’s. Samsung by far is the best LED tv out there right now. Don’t be fooled and get another brand as Toshiba, LG, Sony, none of them can match the quality of the Samsung UN55B8000 model. Once you tune the tv, all I could say was wow! Watching HD channels and blu ray is unbelievable. The thickness and weight is something you have to see to believe. 1.2″ and 51lbs for a 55″ screen?? Unreal!

The only thing that you have to be wary of is that you do need to get used to the colors and motion. Basically everything that is HD looks like it is 3D. The characters pop almost like you are watching 3D. There are instances where everything is so crisp and clear that it looks to be in slow motion. This can be adjusted with the right setting. Funny though that if you look carefully, because the picture is so clear and crisp, you can actually tell everything is fake, as if you were on the set of the movie you are watching and you can tell all the plastic fake props on set!

5 Stars Store Card vs Amazon Credit Card
I thought I bought this TV (which is fantastic and I love it) with 12 months no payments, no interest.

It turns out that the so-called Store Card is not the Amazon credit card–and there was no such deal

using the Credit card. I ended up with $2,899.99 on my Amazon Credit Card–all due the following month.

I called Chase–the manager was arrogant as I tried to explain the problem. She giggled and said that

she’d never heard of this offer. I called Amazon–many pages of “clickable” choices.

I finally found the “Help” link. This guy was nice but explained the difference between the Amazon Credit

Card and the Amazon Store Card and suggested I ship the TV back and redo the order. Nice in theory but

I’d already unpacked and installed the “thing” so it doesn’t pan out in reality. I kept the

TV (it really is nice) and did not pack it up and ship it back, too much hassle.

Next I got an email from Amazon explaining–in so many words–how I f’d up. Nice. I wrote them back and

explained that I’d go ahead, pay off the TV then cancel mu Amazon “Confusion” Card and revert back to my Citi

card that gives me air miles. I felt better… until I received and answer back explaining that my response to THAT

email didn’t go “anywhere” because it’s unanswerable please go to (link such and such). I did, but once again I found

a busy page where it was difficult to come across the link to contact Amazon. Maybe if I still worked–I’m retired–I’d

have enough time (screwing off at work) to hack around and find these links and sort out all these cards, and offers,

etc. But as I explained in the email–that essentially went nowhere–that once I receive the Chase statement that I paid

the TV off–I will take great pride and joy in canceling that Amazon/Chase Credit Card and lick my wounds–they can

kiss my A– if I ever use it again.

Signed: “Enjoying my TV,” and the fact that I

am rich enough to pay off the debt and not have

to deal with jerks like the manager I dealt

with at Chase. She really reminded me of a

town hall meeting where the idiot from Congress

takes a question then calls someone on her Cell.

Duh?

5 Stars Top Picture Quality
I’m sure the price will come down as more LED/240hz TVs enter the market. But right now, this is state of the art and you have to pay a premium to get it. I read several reviews that said 240hz wasn’t worth the hype, but my wife (who has a much better eye for details)could see the difference instantly and insisted (thanks!) we go for the extra bucks.

After two visits to Best Buy and a lot of research online, I knew this was the set for me. Unfortunately, when I returned to my local BB, they couldn’t sell the 55″ model to me because they weren’t a “Magnolia” outlet. (They sell up to 46″). The nearest Magnolia Best Buy is almost two hours away and they won’t deliver. Nor will the BB website deliver it! So we went to Amazon and were pleasantly surprised that the price was better, and included free shipping and a better optional warranty. I’m sure BB is losing a LOT of business with their idiotic “Magnolia” strategy — but that’s their problem. Thanks to them turning me away, I was able to find the TV I wanted for less.

5 Stars Very happy with TV and delivery
Have never ordered something this expensive before from Amazon, but the $500 discount, free delivery, and no sales tax pushed me over the edge to buy.

Placed the order on Monday Oct 12, and it was delivered today Oct 15. Absolutely no problems with CEVA Whiteglove service.

Have owned Samsung LCD TVs before and were happy with them. This TV will replace a 52″ A650 (which will be moved to the bedroom, to replace a 46″ 720P). Funny thing is that our first Samsung 46″ LCD TV cost $1K more than what I just paid for this one.

So far, am pretty happy with the picture. I keep looking for the uneven “flashlights” in the corner but haven’t seen them yet. A better test tonight when we roll the credits from a DVD. TV came with 9/5/09 v1012 firmware which we plan to update to 9/25/09 v1013 tonight.

Update 10/18/09: updated the firmware with no problem. Hubby and I could not see the “flashlights” from the corners even while credits were rolling on a black screen. Just bought a Blu-Ray player, and now the picture is even more fantastic. I am one happy camper.

4 Stars Amazing detail and crispness, watchout for dark scenes
Goods:

The color, contrast, and details are nothing short of amazing.

Makes my other HD TV look like SD.

Light weight (compared to plasma), so easier to hang (no need for those heavy duty metal tanks on the wall that large plasmas require)

Hidden speakers

Stupid blue light can be turned off

Bads:

With scenes that are dark of have lots of black, you can see a backlight effect as if a flash light was behind a black curtain.

I am willing to put up with it given the picture quality 99% of the time (non black scenes), but hence 4 stars instead of 5.

Note that I have not done video adjustment with the video-pro dvd yet as I am still wowed by the picture clarity (have had it for 1 week)
