Cox moved 8.3, with Frontine, to its Digital Tier; meaning that I have to get Cox’s box to get PBS World, to watch Frontline. So, I cancel Fox Cable and got a Channel Master 4221HD.I was lucky that I met a gentlement at Fry’s Electronic, Thunderbird and I17, who advised me that it will be fine in the Attic. To my surprise, I installed the antenna myself, and the pictures are better than anything [...]Thanks.

I already have one of these that I purchased several years ago, and I was looking for another to point in the opposite direction and gain additional channels. It has worked great for years.
However, the version that was sent to me looks NOTHING like the picture..It is a much much cheaper version that barely passes as an antenna. The old wire mesh version is very sturdy in the wind, but this one has only horizontal bars with no vertical bracing except for the cheap plastic ends– that have already broken in shipment and I doubt it will last more than a year. The bowtie part is only held by two very small aluminum strips and wingnuts and already flop around just from handling..any slight wind will bend these right off…It has only one mounting bracket where the pictured wire mesh version has two…Adding to the floppy-ness and just waiting for the first slight wind to creat a mangled disaster.
What you see is NOT what you get, the cost-reduced tinfoil version that they sent me pushes the absolute limits to save another $.02 and still be able to call this an antenna. This will never work outdoors, and if mounted in an attic will still require some extra homemade bracing to keep the bowtie unit from sliding down.
Yea, quality is getting worse everywhere, but this thing sets a new record. It’s a real scam to show that picture but ship something else entirely.
5 Stars Attic Antenna in Chattanooga
Unbelievable!!! I ordered the Channel Master 4221 yesterday from Amazon for $39.99 w/free shipping. It was supposed to be 5 – 9 days shipping, but it was at my house today when I got home from work. I installed it right away in my attic, but I was only getting the same channels I had before with rabbit ears. They were all strong signals (100%) which suprised me. They were 100% even on the VHF channels 3.1, 3.2, 9.1, 9.2 and 12.1. This is supposed to be a UHF only antenna. I checked the instructions and discovered that I had the antenna facing backwards from where the station I wanted was. The bowties need to be facing the station. I went back to the attic and sweated for a few more minutes (it must be at least 1000 degrees in there this afternoon), and then I went back to scan the channels. 19 channels baby!! I got the three extra Georgia PBS channels that I wanted. They are around 50% strength, but they are not stuttering. My kids are happy because one of the channels broadcasts PBS Kids shows all day and night….almost like a free, educational Cartoon Network. I got this antenna to receive the GPB stations (30 miles away) that are in the opposite direction of most of my regular stations (20 miles away). It was recommended by someone on highdefforum.
5 Stars Channel Master 4221HD
I was looking for a small UHF antenna for portable use when camping, and this antenna seemed to fit the bill.
After running it through a cheap and dirty Phillips amplifier, and pushing it up 15 feet in the air, I am happy to report that this little gem totally exceeded my expectations.
At my home, I have an older model Winegard (huge yagi) that was made in the 70’s on a 30-foot tower. It is on a Winegard AP-8275 amplifier, and I get quite a few VHF/UHF channels.
And now, for the comparison test in the backyard….
It received all the high-powered UHF channels I would have expected on the home antenna. I was totally impressed with the level of signal strength from stations 67 miles away, without dropouts.
It did…OK…on VHF-HI band (RF CH 7-13), for which it wasn’t designed. No complaints, just a little bonus
I’m not saying that this is the “best” antenna out there. But, for the price and size, it is a good bet. If you are in the fringe as I am, put an amplifier on this bad boy to make it come alive.
Compared to amplified rabbit ears, it is a night and day difference. And yes, I did raise the rabbit ears to 15 feet in the air to compare.
I would easily recommend one to anyone needing a solution similar to mine.

Note: The unit shown in the picture here on Amazon is not the latest version of this antenna from Channel Master. You can view information on the most updated version of this antenna at [...]. This review covers the improved and updated antenna. This new antenna appears to be a significant upgrade from the former unit which I believe is the subject of some of the earlier reviews. You should check with Amazon to be certain they are providing you with the latest version of this antenna, the one without the mesh screen shown in the picture.
With the demise of analog broadcasting on Friday June 12 the need for my huge traditional VHF antenna (a now discontinued CM 3019 at 133″ in length) vanished like the analog signals over Dallas, Texas. I am 29 miles from the array of broadcast towers in Dallas and this tiny light weight antenna coupled with a 10db amplifier brings in all available local digital channels without a problem. Because of the small size of the antenna I was able to mount the antenna next to my DirecTV antenna on a corner of my home using only a Channel Master wall mount along with 8 feet of light weight aluminum 1 1/2 inch tubing. Previously I had a chimney mounted Channel Master 3019 traditional VHF/UHF mid range antenna with a preamp and powered amplifier which was very large and yet failed to get certain over the air Dallas digital channels (11-1 and 13-1). In addition this large antenna was affected by the winds which are common to our area. The Channel Master 4021hd antenna has such a small footprint that it is basically unaffected by wind, another advantage of the small size. Because of long coaxial runs to several locations in my home I found it necessary to use a simple 10b powered signal amplifier which I attached at the end of a 50 foot RG6 cable run prior to connection with the satellite signal in a duplexer. With this set up I now have a low profile, small light weight antenna that brings in every over the air digital channel in Dallas without any problem whatsoever.
If I have DirecTV why would I want a local over the air antenna? DirecTV only carries the basic local channels whereas with a local over the air antenna I have access to numerous digital subchannels including local weather broadcasts such as 5-2, 8-2 and 8-3 as well as numerous additional local digital broadcast channels not available with either cable or DirecTV. So in my opinion it is worth the small additional cost and hassle of integrating these signals into a DirecTV feed.
Because of difficulties I had experienced in the past with my traditional antenna I was very concerned that this tiny antenna wouldn’t do the job. I was wrong about that. This little puppy barks like a big dog! Yes sometimes big surprises come in small packages. So it is with the Channel Master 4221HD. With this antenna you will not miss the ghosts of analog past.
